These days, if you under-eat or have difficulty gaining weight , higher ghrelin levels may help you consume more food and calories per day. Ghrelin is a hormone that sends a signal to your brain to feel hungry.

It plays a key role in regulating calorie intake and body fat levels. Ghrelin levels typically rise before a meal, when your stomach is empty. Then they decrease shortly after, when your stomach is full 8. While you might assume that people with obesity have higher levels of ghrelin, they may just be more sensitive to its effects.

In fact, some research suggests ghrelin levels are actually lower in people with obesity 9. Other research suggests that people with obesity may have an overly active ghrelin receptor, known as GHS-R, which leads to increased calorie intake 10 , Regardless of your weight, ghrelin levels increase and make you hungry when you start a diet to try to lose weight.

This is a natural response by your body, which tries to protect you from starvation. Your metabolic rate also tends to decrease significantly, especially if you restrict calories for long periods 12 , Ghrelin levels can rise during a weight loss diet, increasing hunger and making it harder to lose weight.

Within a day of beginning a weight loss diet, your ghrelin levels will start to go up. This change continues over the course of weeks. Something really greasy. Well, that'll cause the release of a hormone called leptin. Leptin is similar to insulin in that it represents the presence of energy-rich nutrients in the bloodstream.

So it'll go to the hypothalamus and bind receptors there to inhibit the feeling of hunger, which means that when lipid concentration is low, you're not going to be releasing leptin, and you're not going to be inhibiting the hypothalamus. Now the final thing that talks to our brain is our stomachs.

After we've eaten a bunch, our stomach will be pretty full with food, however, if we haven't eaten in a while, our stomachs can be pretty empty. And I'm sure you've had this happen to you. If you're stomach is empty, it starts talking to you.

It starts making noises. It actually starts to growl, and if you listen closely, the stomach is actually saying, ghrelin, ghrelin, which just happens to be the name of the hormone that's released into the bloodstream to tell the hypothalamus that we are pretty hungry.

We've got a pretty empty stomach. And instead of a bar, I'll put a plus sign here to show that the presence of ghrelin will tell the hypothalamus that we're hungry and motivate us to find some food. One of the interesting regklation that I should mention, though, about leptin, which I can probably write here, leptin levels rarely change, and the reason why is because leptin levels are based more on the amount of adipose in your body than the amount of lipid you have in your blood, which makes sense because even though we'll eat some fatty, greasy meal that'll release lipids into our bloodstream, we'll definitely have a lot more fat tissue in our body beforehand.

Peptide YY PYY is another gut hormone that decreases appetite. PYY levels may be lower in people with obesity, and this may lead to a greater appetite and overeating.

Sufficient levels are believed to play a major role in reducing food intake and decreasing the risk of obesity. People with obesity may have low levels of the fullness hormone PYY. Eating a high protein diet and staying active may help raise levels.
