Bliss is always experienced as being here and there is no external event to trigger it. Life force energy is always here or life would not be. And Bliss is also always here, not separate from life itself. It is experienced in the body or through Aqakens body, but it can also be sensed everywhere.

When people say everything is energy, Bliss is the direct experience of this. Attention has turned to this energy and energy is experienced more prominently than physical matter. It is realized that all physical matter, not only this body, is pure energy.

Aawkens, previous to this level of awakening, was experienced as physical matter is now experienced as energy with the appearance of physical matter to the more limited human senses of sight, hearing and touch.

And even these limited senses are also directly experienced as pure energy. Bliss appears to be fundamental to our basic nature. That, for me, has always been a sign of a fundamental nature. The other clue is that it does not come and go. It is always here, whether attention is on it fully or not.

For years, it simply has been my experience of life. I caution about making a big deal about Bliss, searching for it or trying to attain it as if it were some kind of spiritual reward or goal. I imagine that is a pretty reliable way of never experiencing it.

Just continue doing your practices, letting go of stories and opening to the Unknown. When you are ready for it, it will aa appear. When you are aware of it, you can call it Bliss or whatever you like.

Bliss is usually experienced in blisss later stages of awakening, but you may experience it earlier. You may have already done so. In a moment of great freedom, when for just a moment all stories have fallen away, you may notice this powerful, vibrating energy.

Your mind may even first interpret it as a powerful fear, even fear of your own death. If in that moment, you can let go blis this story too, let go of all stories, return to this freedom before all stories, you may experience, savor and surrender to something that has always been here without your noticing.

And that will be a glorious day indeed. This realization will not come as you expect it to. Does anything? Keep letting go, be diligent about all practices that help you let go and, above all, pay attention.

What you are seeking has always been right here under your nose and far closer and more intimate than that. Seense will eventually discover that underneath every feeling you experience, there is this same Bliss.

Underneath all of this is Bliss. If you are able to let go of the story that supports and creates these feelings, you will find Bliss. It is always here. In the earlier years, 5 years ago with my first kundalini awakening I first experienced bliss and was totally blown away. I had a full kundalini raising, which happened intensely over one night and I stayed in this space for two months, I then wanted it to slow down. Working through what I needed to release, I left this relationship a year a ago and had my second kundalini awakening, it raised fully.

It seems a major disagreement among various sects of religious Buddhism is whether awakening is instantaneous or whether it takes a long time. Perhaps this is a case where language is inadequate because it may be both instantaneous and also might take awhile.

On top of that are different notions of the nature of enlightenment, Western vs. Buddhist definitions of the term, various ideas of what a buddha actually is, et al. This idea seems to be very popular lately. I seem to recall, though, when asked what he was god, human, etc. BTW, I highly recommend this book, especially for those who have struggled with the mysticism and religious aspects of Buddhism.

Batchelor does not denigrate those aspects, but he certainly seems to believe they are non-essential. Thank you for this article. Some very valuable insights here, especially the central truth that bliss is a by-product.

It comes without motive and it manifests in stillness. Maybe it is always there but obscured by thought and the graspings that thought gives rise to. When Shakyamuni became an awakened one the first thing he did was talk to other people about his realization.

Rather than bliss he was in pursuit of the truth of life. I will say one word in favor of bliss. It is what kept me meditating for many years until I came to the realization that bliss was not the answer. I would sit on my cushion and meditate intensely hour after hour until I experienced the bliss that was so wonderful.

I thought it was the answer and that some day it would be bliss all the time. The by-product of pursuing this bliss was that it was a great motivator for meditating and my mind finally figured out in its own time that bliss was not the real thing.

Now I have other motivations for meditating but I still have a soft spot in my heart for my friend bliss who helped me along the way. Karma has been at work with me in what initially appeared to be in a serendipitous manner. At first I thought it may be great for reaching a rapid deep state of meditation myself without thought, but then upon meditating myself, I saw anxiety, loneliness, ager rise up with thoughts, and boredom also raised its ugly head.

The feelings at times were painful making it difficult to concentrate, retain clarity, as well as equanimity. Twenty-some ago, when I first joined a 12 step program, a young woman in a meeting warned about spiritual greed. About 9 years ago, I picked up a book by Pema Chodron that introduced me to the idea of facing my truth, not running away.

Buddhism has given me the path, the structure, the courage to do this without grasping for an emotional high. Acceptance of reality. grasping at the bliss is part of the learning curve. I know I did. I have stepped tentatively on and off a spiritual path for 20 years.

Then one day I stepped into a Yoga studio. A few months ago, after a loss in my life, I began a Tonglen meditation practice, I use what is available to me Yoga, Kirtan, Metta meditation. This time Tonglen and watching, reading, just soaking up everything Pema Chodron had to say was it.

The pain was there, will always be there there its not bad or good. Now that I am through that time in my life, I am happier. How wonderful is my life? Because of this loss I now have another tool to use, another experience to use in my growth.

And these articles and discussions are just puzzling than inspiring. But I would like to share my personal experience, which I think at least it was a realization? And I was sitting in the sauna heartaching, and all of sudden I remembered that there is no ego, I guess I was so desperate. I would never forget that moment.

Maybe I was not desperate enough. Then I found staying with the painful feeling again it felt like rock bottom suddenly swung into joy with a see-saw-like movement. Obviously, this can just be dismissed as impermanence.

Fleeting states of bliss or ascensions into heavenly paradises were inadvertently believed by later students of Buddhism to be its final goals. Thank you so much for this article. For some odd reason I seem to learn and awaken a bit more when I take that walk on the dark side and see what I am have missed or ignored.

There are negative things that we do with our emotions, but our emotions themselves are neither negative nor positive. They simply are.

David, I can completely relate to your learning more while walking on the dark side. But this time instead of running away I stayed with the feelings, analyzing what they were physically and what thoughts and stories went along with them and lo and behold, it worked!

The issue here is that those are not awakened relatively speaking do see emotional experiences as positive or negative. However, awakening is not about seeking ANY emotional experience or special state. In my path towards awakening, of which I only glimpse horizons, I have found many painful truths which have acted as signposts toward a direction which ultimately be infinite in length.

Eventually, the daughter can no longer withstand the lie she had told. She confesses that the real father was a young man in the village whom she had tried to protect. The parents immediately go to Hakuin and explain what had happened.

When most people hear this story, they balk at the idea that a man could be just as happy with being accused of rape and being forced to take care of a new baby as he is having his child taken away from him. But the story exemplifies that life will always throw unexpected things our way.

We might get fired from our job or lose a loved one. Our car will break down, our children will disappoint us, our political candidate will lose.

No one knows what the future will hold, so our task is to cultivate a resilient mind that remains peaceful through the ups and downs of our lives and to live with an open heart, no matter what.

Inevitably, any time I talk about this wisdom and the great teachings that have been passed along for generations, a student will always raise their hand and ask the same question. The more progressive a student is, the more likely they are to object. For students deep in the world of social justice and human rights, the idea of accepting things as they are, just as they are, is too hard a pill to swallow.

There is also the objection that, with such tremendous suffering in the world, how could anyone say that everything is exactly as it is supposed to be?

The first way to answer these questions is simple: this teaching is not for anyone else but you. The spiritual path is based around personal liberation, and the teachings only apply to someone who is on the path. No, they would not. But, if a person—any person—walked into the ashram, approached the guru, and expressed the challenges in their life and their desire to be free of them, then this particular piece of wisdom would be appropriate.

Your guru might even recommend that you go on a fast for 10 days in order to begin the process of cultivating nonattachment to sense pleasures.

So, the teachings of awakening are not for abstract people in abusive relationships or those navigating a system of injustice, but for a person on the path looking to free themselves from the vagaries of life, no matter their own background.

The great yogic sage Patanjali is clear in his sutra 2. Keep in mind that this teaching was written two thousand years ago, before modern medicine and technological advancements, before gender equality, and in the middle of a culture built around the caste system.

This is because our liberation is an internal shift in our consciousness and does not require any external stimulus to happen. There is another very important insight that this line of questioning involves, however, and it takes us to the heart of what it truly means to be an enlightened being.

Why is there suffering in the world, and what are we to do about it? Sure, maybe my spiritual awakening will cure me of my suffering and liberate me from karmic bondage, but what of the suffering of others?

It is deeply freeing to be released from our subtle bindings of wanting to be good people. But when Bliss is idealized as the final summit of spiritual perfection as it often is then we have a serious issue on our hands. Bliss does not give any indication about ethical behavior one way or another.

Bliss is not interested in such matters. Not at all. In the most extreme cases, this can led a human being to claim that they are beyond good and evil. Charlie Manson made just such a claim btw. Abuse by spiritual teachers, cultism and the like all flow from this basic error. This element is also quite clear.

Not only does the spiritual state of Bliss have no orientation to right or wrong, it has no orientation to purpose. It has no point. It has no direction or aim. This can be radically destabilizing and disorienting for the realizer.

Again, if Bliss is articulated as the final, ultimate point of spiritual realization of a human life even , which in some cases it is, then the final point is pointless. Bliss SIMPLY IS. It cannot be owned.

Only something with direction, aim, or purpose can be followed. Bliss has no aim, purpose, or direction. And this, like all addictions, is an unhealthy response to unhealed trauma. Given the severity of these dangers associated with Bliss maybe Bliss should be abandoned altogether?

There is a reason the Indian tradition valued Bliss so highly by naming it as one of its triad of spiritual realization. Bliss has something to teach us about being human that nothing else can.

Bliss has an utterly unique wisdom associated with it. If we deny Bliss altogether we lose access to that very important truth of our humanity. Bliss is part of us whether we acknowledge it or not. The only choice is whether we make Bliss a conscious, integrated aspect of our human existence or not.

If we choose not, then we will suffer the consequences of not owning this aspect of ourselves. Unconscious Bliss leads us forever seeking for some release elsewhere and forever suffering right where we are. Therefore, the question we needing be asking is: how can we incorporate the beauty of Bliss without its dark sides taking over?

Proper Preparation Teachers should be open and honest with students about the dangers of bliss. Students should not be introduced to Bliss until they have some capacity to properly regulate their nervous system , understand their emotions and relate to them in a healthy fashion , as well as having learned how to work with their shadow.

They will also have to be introduced to other somewhat safer spiritual states first, like Peacefulness , Presence , Awakened Heart and so on. Only then are they ready to be introduced to Bliss. This site is dedicated to The Soul. It is The Soul, in other words, that is the proper context for integration of our spiritual nature.

For a little more on soul versus spirit see here and here. In very very broad strokes, spiritual enlightenment teachings of all varieties almost always advocate that our spiritual nature is the proper context for us to live as awakened beings.

I get the argument but just look at the term: spirit -ual teachings. The bias is right there in the name. I define our spiritual nature as that which is universal and the same for all of us. Bliss is one expression, one state of our spiritual nature.

Spiritual teachings often divide the human up into simply two parts: the ego bad and the spirit good. The path then is very simply to deny, crucify, transcend, or in some way annihilate the ego in order to be spiritually awake. When spiritual teaching is set up as one part bad e.

the ego and one part good spirit , then inevitably the whole of the teaching is about how to get out of the bad and into the good and once having gotten into the good how to stay in the good permanently.

I used to practice this way for years. I argue instead we should see our Soul—i. our singular, distinct manifestation and expression of The Universal—as the proper vessel or vehicle for living a fully human and fully divine life.

What this means practically is that the spiritual aspects of us need to be incorporated into our Soul. Whereas in the history of spirituality most spirituality draws the biggest circle being Spirit and believing the Soul should fit inside Spirit. Where spirituality would advocate No Boundaries, Soul-teaching advocates Sovereignty—the space where each Soul in an empowered way draws a sacred boundary around itself and incorporates and integrates all aspects of itself in a fully enfleshed manner.

All aspects. Spiritual, psychological, emotional, etc. Then you I argue should identify with your Soul. The Soul sets a proper container and context for Bliss to enter in and be welcomed.

Bliss is not the final voice but simply now a Voice. Bliss is freed up to offer its wisdom without bringing in its wake all the baggage and dangers associated with it. When Bliss is not set up to solve a problem or be our salvation then it works quite well.

What Joseph Campbell actually meant by Bliss was the Soul. So it turns out in the end he was right—we should Follow Our Bliss , i.. e we should Follow the inherent impulses and charges of The Soul. But that is not what people hear when they hear the word Bliss.

I think Campbell should have chosen a different word to describe the inherent drives and pull of The Soul than Bliss. What Campbell meant by bliss is neither a temporary emotional state of the personality nor is it the Bliss of our spiritual nature.

I think we should leave Bliss to be what it is a spiritual state of energetic awakening beyond all categories and find a different word to describe the pull of our Soul. Both are very important but they are very different and using the same term to describe both causes category errors and unnecessary pain and suffering for spiritual practitioners.

The great Indian realizer Sri Aurobindo gave an alternative interpretation to Ananda. He saw Ananda as the purposeful movement into incarnate reality of the spiritual. Aurobindo, as a consequence, was very critical of the classic Vedanta tradition of awakening represented by figures like Shankara or Ramana Maharshi.

My experience of Bliss is much more in the Vedanta lineage. I do however believe Aurobindo was correct that there is a Creative or Incarnating Impulse. What some call an Evolutionary or Creative or God Impulse.

For me this Evolutionary or Creative Impulse is actually a new revelation or insight. Where for Aurobindo the Incarnating Nature of Bliss was the original insight of the Indian lineage he cited the ancient Indian texts the Vedas to support his claim.

But I think he was actually talking about a new insight. There are some points of contact between his view and the ancient one—the connection is through the energetic pulsation of Bliss. But in the Aurobindian line that pulsation has desire to express and is existing within a frame of spiritual evolution, i.

the Descent of Supermind, Supermind being the first expression of Sat-Chit-Ananda. It would be for Aurobdino as I see it something more like:. A natural sense of contentment arises, and the whole world feels at peace.

Know that this too shall pass and that as awful as this time is, the light that comes through at the end is worth your patience. You are worth your patience. If you have experienced a prolonged or intense divine revelation; if you spent time in the energy of unconditional love and felt it envelop you wholly; if the divine lifted you up and joined with you in oneness; if you felt the joy of that ultimate connection, that of absolutely no separation; if you knew what being connected to the whole of life feels like, what coming home feels like, then coming back down into yourself can feel like a shock.

In the coming back into your body, there tends to be a great contrast and a re-experiencing of the original trauma which is separation , both of which may feel like a falling from grace.

You may in truth not want to come back. After these heightened bliss and grace states, many individuals experience a "dark night of the soul" period.

This is perfectly normal. You haven't been dropped back into the world because you are not good or worthy enough. You did nothing wrong dear one. This wasn't your time to go home just yet.

The divine gave you those blissful experiences not to break your heart, but to remind you what home is, who you are and how loved and connected you truly are. You may not feel it at this moment, but you and life are still very much one.

The divine is still inside of you. In reality, you never disconnected or separated, and you are here to embody this truth; to fully experience this connection to your divine self within your body.

You can then bring this message back to the rest of humanity in your own beautiful and unique way. It was during this time that I seriously contemplated living the life of a penniless monk. I wanted to take the vows of renunciation and live a life dedicated to finding the truth.

The more I withdrew from everything, the more hurt and pained my mom become. She saw me withering away in front of her eyes. She was constantly haunted by the thoughts of me renouncing the material life and becoming a monk.

I was very good in composing and creating music, and I decided to shift to Mumbai and find creative expression as a sound designer and musician. I found solace in music and thus began my career in music which I pursued for many years.

Since I was working as a freelance sound designer and audio engineer, I took few gigs and dedicated most of my time in my spiritual pursuit. There was a time when I even lived and meditated in a cave. I met some fascinating sages in my journeys. My first introduction to Non duality Advaita was through the works of Nisargadatta Maharaj. Maharaj intrigued and fascinated me.

This got me interested in other Advaita teachers like Ramana Maharishi, Atamananda etc. I also started reading the works of J Krishnamurti, whom I immensely admired.

It was during this time I started having fantastic spiritual experiences. Sometimes I felt so ecstatic that every cell in my body would explode with bliss. I felt that I was floating in an infinite ocean of ecstasy. I was absorbed in these expanded rapturous states of being for hours.

A sense of immense sacredness and divinity infused my entire consciousness. During these states, my body sometimes used to go in spontaneous states of yoga. Sometimes my body would become so flexible that I could bend spontaneously into difficult yoga postures.

Many of these postures were completely unknown to me but the body automatically aligned itself to certain ancient forms. Another curious thing happened with my breathing; I experienced spontaneous Pranayama and kumbhka Ancient yogic breathing patterns and techniques.

It is a cessation of breath, which leads to higher states of consciousness. I experienced both the outer and the inner cessation of breath. After I took a deep breath in, my breath used to stop for around a minute to minute and a half.

During this time the mind felt utterly still and pure. After the inner cession, I would exhale, wherein my breath used to again stop for approximately a minute. This would continue sometimes for 45 minutes at a stretch. In , I had gone to Mirik, a small town in the Himalayas for silent contemplation.

One day, as I was strolling besides the beautiful mountain lake, engrossed in witnessing my consciousness, something unexpected happened. As I looked within, I could feel my consciousness slowly expanding beyond my body. To my utter amazement, my consciousness expanded and slowly embraced the lake and the mountain ranges.

As I looked at the clouds, I could see them become one with me. I was suddenly everywhere. The entire space was myself and everything under the sky was me. Every point of space contained me, reflected my consciousness, which was mine, but was also universal.

The entire creation melted into a luminous wave of consciousness. I was free from the bondage of individuality, from being a mere speck.

I was the totality, but it was not me as a person. There was identity, but it was universal, all embracing. It was at this moment that the teachings of Nisargadatta, J krishnamurthi, Advaita, Zen and Buddhism all unfolded and I realized what they were trying to point at.

A spiritual awakening can be triggered by anything, from the completely mundane to the completely life-altering. According to spiritual author Shannon Kaiser , a few common causes include life-changing events i. and people who open a spiritual "door" for you like a twin flame or soul mate.

Similarly, feelings of déjà vu aren't uncommon either. There can be no doubt: Spiritual awakenings are transformative, and the people in your life won't always be able to appreciate that. Richardson suggests asking loved ones to respect what you're going through, reminding them that they don't have to resonate with your awakening.

As Richardson notes, it will be hard to ignore the call from your spiritual side as you go through this process. The desire to find meaning and fulfillment within your spirituality will likely become one of your biggest priorities.

Another sign, according to Richardson, is having newly heightened intuition or new intuitive abilities showing up. They were always there, buried beneath the layers of your ego , and now that you've awakened, you feel much more in tune with yourself.

In addition to that heightened intuition, Kaiser says you'll be able to sense any inauthentic or manipulative behavior when someone is deceiving you, as well. As you figure out your own spiritual path, Richardson notes, you also become more accepting of the idea that everyone else is on their own unique path, too.

Things like winning arguments or convincing people of your views don't matter as much anymore. As you begin "realizing that every living thing is inherently worthy and equal," Richardson says, you will feel called to be of service, whether to people, to animals, or to the environment.

It's important to you that you have a cause you can get behind to make your life feel purposeful. It may not be about changing your current roles or jobs, Richardson adds, but just approaching what you're already doing with a deeper sense of service.

According to Kaiser, during an awakening, your spiritual teachers may "appear everywhere with perfect timing to help you. Spiritual awakenings are no easy undertaking, and while there's hope for enlightenment on the other side, it can feel very lonely, as Kaiser explains.

It's isolating to have your whole life flipped upside down, especially if the other people in your life aren't quite on the same wave.

While you may feel less connected to your friends at family at first, you will feel more connected to nature, Kaiser and Richardson agree.

From plants to animals to the world as a whole, you will sense your interconnectedness to it all, and it may be quite moving. According to both Richardson and Kaiser, senses will often become heightened during spiritual awakenings, as you become more tuned in to the present moment.

Along with heightened awareness and senses, Kaiser adds you may have other bodily sensations too. Sleep disturbances are not uncommon. A number of physical symptoms can accompany spiritual awakenings too, Kaiser says, like fatigue and brain fog. Though of course, these symptoms could also be a sign of a medical condition, so don't necessarily write them off as nothing.

As your spiritual life begins to transform, so will your day-to-day life, including habits and routines, Kaiser notes. Perhaps now you make it a priority to spend time in nature or meditate, or you've ditched old habits that were no longer serving you. Again, spiritual awakenings aren't easy, and the alienation and ego-shattering realizations that occur can make anyone feel like they are living in a new reality.

According to Richardson, as you begin feeling more connected to the world around you, you'll also have increased empathy regarding the suffering of others. The prevalence of suffering may feel impossible to ignore, hence why you now feel more called to be of service.

On top of feeling more empathetic, Richardson says those going through spiritual awakenings likely "feel more compassionate toward others—while still wanting to hold them accountable. And lastly, now that you've "awakened" to your life, you probably have a childlike wonder and curiosity for the world around you, even when things get tough.

You could say the actual "spiritual awakening" is just the first step on the long path to enlightenment. Indeed, the initial awakening may happen in just a moment, but the process has many stages, which are as follows:.
